Reasons to smoke

Derek Anderson writes: As a smoker, I believe that smoking relieves my stress. It was an essential tool during the World Wars I and II. What more needs to be said?

I smoke because I enjoy it, especially with a drink down the pub or after a meal with friends. Addicted? Perhaps. But I will never give up. I enjoy it too much and in most other ways I look after my health. How many antismokers are fat and unfit?

You said it mike :-) He in glass houses and all that! I think that the key to everything is moderation - smoke, drink, food ..... whatever. And as a free citizen, it should be my (informed) choice what I do with my body.

The men & women who fought two world wars for us are going to be chucked out in the cold to have a cigarette! I think that is a disgraceful way to treat anyone.

Mike and dcbrainstorm say it all.
The treatment of smokers is disgraceful and such treatment applied to other people would be illegal.

This week a judge sentencing an egg-collector to jail commented that "A prison sentence was needed to cure him of his addiction."

That is the sort of 'addiction' we smokers suffer from, something we like to do. Not clinical addiction in the proper sense, but loose language which in the case of smoking goes unchallenged.

What we need is a perceptive investigative journalist in this country, like Michael Moore, who would dare to challenge the ridiculous false claims made about smoking. But who would have guts to risk their career in journalism?

Both my husband and I smoke because we enjoy it. We are not drinkers and therefore do not go to pubs, our treat each week is a meal out at our favourite local restaurant, where currently we can smoke. The staff have become our friends and the food is really good, however for us to enjoy the experience we like to smoke between courses and with our coffee afterwards. Where will our relaxation come from when this is banned? Even those who call themselves occasional smokers usually have their occasional smokes after or during a meal out!
