In sickness and health

Lyn writes: As a smoker I have noticed that, along with myself, the other 2 or 3 people at work who smoke are also the ones that have virtually no time off sick, unlike our supposedly more healthy colleagues. There are only around 30 people in our company and there isn't a week that goes by without someone being off sick for a day or more and it is always the non smokers!

Funny you should say this, Lyn, but I have noticed that the non-smokers in our office are off work due to sickness more often than the smokers.

Obviously, this is antedotal evidence, but it would be interesting to find out the proportion of days lost due to sickness between the two groups.

The often touted "smokers take off more days sick and are therefore less productive" by the antis is almost certainly a complete fabrication, no different to the rest of the propaganda on smoking spouting from such organisations as ASH and the BMA.

I too have noticed that the nonsmokers at my workplace tend to miss nuch more work than us
unhealthy smokers.... There still, to this day, is no solid proof that secondhand smoke is doing any harm to nonsmokers, though they continue to try to blame everything under the sun on smoking.

I think it's a plot to take away our civil rights. Just watch as all of our rights slowly fade away. This is only the beginning.

Totally agree. I worked for many years in printing factory, and as for the fumes (we'll not even go there). I found there were more people taking time off that did not smoke, usually Monday mornings, than the smokers did. Also spent more time down the doctors. Strange that isn't it?

You are right Frank, this is only the beginning. Just watch the smug faced anti smokers when something dear and pleasurble to them is suddenly jumped on, once smokers can no longer be blamed for everything under the sun that is wrong. I bet they will fight tooth and nail to protect their rights and freedom of choice!!
